Overview
Hip pain is a common presentation particularly among older adults and athletes. It can arise from acute injuries, usually through sports or auto accidents, or chronic degenerative use. The hip joint, or femoroacetabular joint, is a ball and socket joint with the ball being the head of the femur and the socket being the acetabulum. Between these two bones is a fibrocartilage called the labrum. This acts as a cushion and shock absorber between the ball and socket of the joint. The joint is also composed of many other ligaments for stability as well as muscles and tendons for movement.

Conventional Approaches
Hip pain is commonly first seen by family medicine or primary care doctors in outpatient clinics. Some doctors my first try conservative treatments or refer to an orthopedic specialist for further testing and diagnosis. Typically, x-ray imaging and MRI are needed to make the correct diagnosis and for complete evaluation of the joints integrity. Initial conservative treatments include over the counter medications such as Ibuprofen (NSAID) and Tylenol for pain management. Additionally, at home therapies like icing the hip, stretching, and exercise may also be recommended. For continued pain, steroid injections into the hip joint and surrounding tissues will be tried. Finally, arthroscopic surgery or hip replacement are used for chronic painful hips with compromised structures.
PRP Hip Pain Relief
Platelet Rich Plasma is a regenerative medicine injection that we use at our Gilbert, AZ clinic for joint pain. The treatment involves taking a small sample of the patient’s own blood (60-120ml’s), centrifuging, and then extracting the platelets from the other components of the blood. Once the platelets are extracted and concentrated, they then can be injected into the the damaged structures of the joint. The aim of the treatment is to restore structural strength and cartilage of the Hip by treating the joint and the labrum between the ball and socket. We also treat the supporting ligaments and tendons of the Hip joint to provide further stability and structural integrity to the joint.
