Overview of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is a very common presentation in family medicine and pain management, involving the pain on the bottom heel of the foot.  The pain stems from microtrauma and degeneration of the fascial layer that connects the back of the foot to the toes in the front.  The plantar fascia provides arch support and strength to the bottom of the foot under normal conditions.  Damage can arise from extra force or overuse of the foot.  This is commonly seen in runners, various types of athletes, and women who wear high heel shoes.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Foot Pain
  • Stabbing sensation
  • Pain on the first steps in the morning
  • Pain after exercise

Conventional Approaches to Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis can be diagnosed in office through a detailed case history and physical exam.  Usually, the pain can be easily elicited by palpating the heel and bottom of the foot.  Imaging is rarely needed to make this diagnosis, but can be ordered for complex presentations.  For those cases, x-ray and MRI provide further detail as to the root cause of the foot pain.  Generally, conservative treatments are used initially to treat plantar fasciitis.  These include resting the foot, icing the area of pain, and stretches performed at home.  If the pain continues, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories will be used.  Common examples being Ibuprofen, and Naproxen.  Additional therapies for pain relief include fitted orthotics for your shoes, splinting of the foot and physical therapy.  Surgery and steroid injections are considered for continued pain after months of no relief from other treatments.  These options provide pain relief but decrease the structural integrity of the foot.

PRP Plantar Fasciitis Relief

PRP Plantar Fasciitis injections in Gilbert, AZ At Atlas Health Medical Groups Gilbert, AZ clinic, platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections are used to treat plantar fasciitis foot pain.  The treatment involves taking a sample of the patient’s own blood, centrifuging, and then extracting the platelets from the other components of the blood. Once the platelets are extracted and concentrated, they then can be injected into the the damaged structures of the foot.  The aim of the treatment is to restore structural strength of the fascial tissue by treating the laxity and micro trauma of the plantar fascia.  This typically involves treating the plantar fascia, plantar aponeurosis, and the tendon and ligament attachments of the medial and anterior calcaneus bone.  We also treat the spring ligament of the foot to provide increased arch and structural support.
