Naturopathic Hypothyroid Case Review
Jane Doe (fictional name) is a 44 year old female who presented to our clinic in Gilbert / Mesa, AZ with weight gain of 1 year duration. She reported that she had not changed her diet or exercise over the past year but still had gained over 20 pounds. Jane also mentioned that she had began a new job 1.5 years ago that significantly increased her daily stress. She reported other symptoms that included, occasional constipation, poor daily energy, and thinning hair. At this point in time, I completed a comprehensive physical examination, ordered labs and scheduled a follow up visit when the results were in.
The results showed an increased thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), decreased thyroxine (T4), and decreased cortisol hormone throughout the day. My assessment was:
- Hypothyroidism
- Adrenal Fatigue Contributing
- Too Much Stress
- Nutritionally Poor Diet
After reviewing the case history and the lab results, I created a personalized treatment plan for Jane that worked with her schedule and lifestyle. The plan included a combination medication (T4 and T3) that provided her body with thyroid hormone to restore normal levels. We also addressed her high stress load by incorporating more restful downtime and a stress relieving supplement. Finally, I worked with Jane’s busy schedule to incorporate some helpful nutritional changes such as more anti-inflammatory foods (salmon, olive oil, avocados), better choices at restaurants that she frequents, and weekly meal planning. I followed up with Jane 6 weeks later and re-assessed her case and her labs. At this point in time her TSH had returned to normal levels and her T4 had risen as well. Jane had lost 10 pounds since our initial visit and was experiencing increased energy throughout the day. She reported feeling so much better that she resumed her membership at her local gym and had gone hiking with her husband over the past weekend.
