Natural Weight Loss Doctor: A Case Review
Michelle (fictional name) is a 33 year old women from Gilbert, AZ who presented to Atlas Health Medical Group with weight gain over the past 1.5 years. During that time she had moved across the country to take a new job, for which she was very excited about. The new job was a promotion in her field of work and included managing people for the first time in her career. This aspect brought Michelle great stress throughout the day as she preferred to befriend everyone previously. In addition to the new job, she had let her diet slip and was now eating out daily with carbohydrate rich snacks in between meals. Michelle had no recent lab-work taken so I ordered a thyroid panel, lipid panel, HbA1c, salivary cortisol x4, vitamin D, vitamin B12, CBC, CMP, and female hormone panel to begin with.
The results came back shortly and included slightly elevated TSH, slightly decreased T4, elevated HbA1C, low vitamin D, and high cortisol levels throughout the day.
My assessment was:
- Subclinical Hypothyroidism (functional)
- Poor Nutrition / Diet
- Subclinical vitamin D Deficiency
- Elevated Cortisol
- Adrenal Insufficiency
This case picture is actually very common and I see it almost daily in my clinical practice. Poor stress management combined with poor nutrition depletes the body rather quickly and leaves no reserves in the tank. Prolonged high stress (cortisol) puts extra work on the adrenal gland, which begins to malfunction over time. This usually results in decreased cortisol output and eventually decreased thyroid function. Often times patients develop hypothyroidism in this exact mechanism and then are prescribed Synthroid. This gives them temporary relief but does not address the adrenal glands that initiated the hypothyroidism to begin with.
Knowing this information, I formulated a customized plan for Michelle as part of our wellness weight loss program. The plan put a heavy focus on managing and reducing stress through breathing and supplement prescriptions. We also addressed her adrenal gland and thyroid health with nutrient dense foods and supplements that help restore function. Finally, I had Michelle get outside and get direct sunlight for 15 minutes per day to increase her vitamin D levels. Michelle was also enrolled in our online health curriculum that helped educate her further about what was going on in her body provided other great health tips.
After completing our 3 month weight loss wellness program we re-assessed Michelle’s case. At this point in time, she had significant energy increases throughout the day, had lost 13 pounds, and was also effectively managing her jobs stressful demands. Her thyroid levels had returned back into the optimal ranges and she was doing great following a nutrient dense diet plan.
