History of ASU

Arizona State University was founded in 1885 as the Arizona Territorial Normal School. The first graduating class of Arizona State Teachers College, created by an act of the legislature and housed in what is now known as Carver Hall at Arizona State University, had one student; Margaret Geddie who later became its first female principal in 1917. ASU expanded and added its first graduate program in 1925 and became Tempe State Teachers College after the passage of Arizona State college and university.

In 1958, the Arizona state legislature passed a bill merging Arizona State Teachers College with Arizona State college to form Arizona state university at Tempe on land donated by Tempe residents for this purpose. In 1959 the site was officially named Arizona State University, and rapidly expanded offering programs in business, education, engineering, and nursing.

In 1986 the Arizona Board of Regents elected to move ASU from Tempe campus to a new location 20 miles east known as Sky Harbor Airport which is now called Arizona state university at the West Campus. In 1996 Arizona legislature passed proposition 301 that designated Arizona State University as Arizona’s primary land-grant institution.

In May 1997 Arizona Board of Regents passed a resolution to move Arizona state university back on the Tempe campus in the areas known today as Arizona State University at the Downtown Phoenix Campus, Arizona state university Polytechnic campus, and Arizona state university West campus.

Today Arizona state university is Arizona’s largest public university with over 70,000 students enrolled. Arizona State University offers various undergraduate and graduate degrees in the fields of liberal arts, business administration, engineering, law, and medicine.
